Why You Should Read It: There are a lot of "And suddenly, Rose remembers everything" stories, but what I like about this one is the bits of characterisation that make it unique. Like Ten's pyjama bottoms. Also, I like how Rhi plays with language.

Why You Should Read It: I am so pleased folks have remembered that there are something like 100 Big Brother houses, all with fully stocked kitchens on the Gamestation. Also, I am just a little bit in love with Jack in this. And yes, I do think flirting like mad is exactly the first thing he would do when face-to-face with a stranger in a natty pinstriped suit. Excellent Jack voice, and just so much fun to read. It almost makes having to wait another year bearable.

Summary: Watching and learning and finding what matters.
Why You Should Read It: The POTW ficathon spawned a large number of stories with similar plots and themes, but the majority of them have focused on Rose, and her reactions to the Doctor's regeneration. It's nice to see something from the Doctor's POV, and this just does a beautiful job of exploring how he handles the change as well.

Summary: After the Doctor's regeneration, Rose has adjusted -- but can Mickey?
Why You Should Read It: I absolutely love Mickey being, as always, a page behind. And also the voice of reason. After all, just cos we get regeneration, and even Rose might (fuelled no doubt by her own needs and desires), that's no reason to expect Mickey to just play right along. Beautiful characterisation, and excellent ear for dialogue. Poor Mickey. Time travelling isn't so much a victimless crime, and you can have such empathy for him, here, without him being pathetic. Which shows a lovely light touch. And you feel awful for him, cos while anything can and would happen, Rose coming back to him and them ever being the same again really isn't one of them.

Time's Scythe by calapine
Summary: The Doctor has one final journey to make.
Why You Should Read It: It's definitely a "you make your own hell" sort of situation, and I hope that Time Lords don't actually have to go through an afterlife like this, but the concept and execution pretty much blew my ass away. The Ninth Doctor's story was very much about loss, but this story is about fear, and it shows that that's hardly unique to any one incarnation of the Doctor. I found the sequence with the Second Doctor particularly chilling for some reason. And I love the interaction between the different incarnations as a way of dealing with one person who just happens to show ten different faces to the world. All of them running.

From This Day to the Ending of the World by icebluenothing
Summary: The last shot in the Time War has fired. The Doctor has to deal with the last thing he expected or wanted -- he survived . . . .
Why You Should Read It: I wanna keep icebluenothing and make him write fic for me all the time. Because I just adore his take on the Doctor. This is such an interesting look at what the Time War might have done, and how deeply it affects him and the universe at large. Such a gorgeous look at companions he might have had and lost, and how that loss shapes him, along with the crushing weight of responsibility that he takes on personally, whether its deserved or not. But what I like best is the sense of hope it still ends on, because hope is as much a part of the Doctor as the despair.

It'll Be Alright by sarah531
Summary: For the past year, Trisha Delaney had noticed the signs.
Why You Should Read It: Such a gorgeous look at a character that's only been mentioned in passing, and even then not as a person so much as a representation of Mickey & Rose's relationship. I love how sarah builds a character out of these references that feels real and substantial and worth learning about, and then uses that character to show us something about the characters we do know from the series.

Subtle Chemistry by doona_rose
Summary: The Doctor (10) tries to explain to Rose just why he likes Chemistry so much.
Why You Should Read It: The first in a series of Doctor/Rose stories which posits a very believable Tenth Doctor (and added bonus of mental image of Tennant in white labcoat). I love love love how she builds the characters relationship on what we know, grounding it in the characters we know and love, and then spins it off in a way I can see immediately. Plus major props for science as metaphor. Just a charming, charming series.

Summary: One can be a divisor, too.
Why You Should Read It: There's been a lot of discussion generated in the last few years in the fandom (moreso lately, obviously, due to the Ninth Doctor being a lot more overly flirty than his previous incarnations) regarding the Doctor and whether or not he has ever actually been portrayed as "asexual" or whether that's how fandom has read into the source material based on individuals relative comfort zones with the idea of the Doctor actually having desires (let alone acting on them). This story kinda sorta takes that idea, turns it up to 15, and makes you snatch your hand back, suck on your scorched fingers, and go "wtf just happened?" right before you go "holy shit, that was amazing."

Summary: Rose is having trouble dealing with the regeneration...
Why You Should Read It: You may have noticed a trend in the rec'ing of POTW tags. Sorry, but obviously until Christmas, we'll be seeing a lot of them in the fandom. That said, I do really like reading different authors' takes on similar situations. In this case, Rose dealing with change. There's one bit that I truly adore in this, and it's how proud Rose is of her mum and Mickey, for their part in helping her get back to the Doctor. I love that bit leik whoa. I also love exactly how the Doctor helps Rose get over the shock of the regen. It ends on a lovely feeling of hope, which I really like.

Summary: Some men want to remember - while others just want to forget.
Why You Should Read It: If the Doctor is all about Gallifrey go BOOM, then Jack tends to be all about those missing 2 years. And I like how those two are contrasted and compared here, because they both make strong men vulnerable, but also empathetic to each other. Also, I like hearing the Doctor talk about Gallifrey. It's the exact lack of sentimentality that sort of makes the loss more keen. I'm not so much for the psychic!sex thing, but I like the character stuff in the first half of this muchly.

Why You Should Read It: Two words: Amanda and Methos (whom I still think of as Adam, due to 'Methos' sounding like a breath mint. Sorry HL fandom...). Lots of crossover-y fun--with a neat twist at the end which I won't give away just yet.

Why You Should Read It: Beautiful little character snippets that add up to a gorgeous whole, and I adore the dialogue in particular.

Summary: Contemplation of the age gap between them.
Why You Should Read It: This is more of a sketch than a proper story, but there some lovely stuff in it about what the gap between the Doctor and Rose actually is and isn't, if that makes any kind of sense.

Summary: He's already said his good-byes.
Why You Should Read It: Just a gorgeous look at the Ninth Doctor right at the end. Beautiful play of language, and I love how his voice comes through in the prose.

I Speak For Gallifrey by calapine
Summary: Time travel, and an option it provides.
Why You Should Read It: I remember when I re-read this while I was doing my MAD noms and wanted desperately to nom it for canon except that technically, it's not a story about the Ninth Doctor so much as it's a story about the First Doctor, and also, it's not really about the first Doctor so much as it's a story about a choice someone else had to make that is a helluva thing, and I can't say anything more without spoiling. But holy. crap. so. cool.

Why You Should Read It: I wonder if RTD had any idea what smut would follow, when he introduced this little prop. And this is some amazingly lovely written sexy threesome goodness. I love the bruised knees, and the closeness of the TARDIS trio through it all.

Why You Should Read It: What can I say? I'm a sucker for silly, sexy fun. Sometimes you need a story about being half-contortionist and being bored with nothing to do. The ending is a touch predictable, but I like the journey.

Summary: Rose is kissing Jack again.
Why You Should Read It: Bittersweet post-regen story that shows how Jack and ROse are coping (or not coping) with the new Doctor.

Five People Jack Could Have Fallen in Love With But Didn't by kataclysmic
Summary: Two years he's forgotten, fucks in alleys and run-down motels, sledging on frozen waves, and six months spent in London in 2006.
Why You Should Read It: IMG SIMON TAM OMG. OMG FAITH OMG!!! And even if you don't recognise all the players, it's still quite a ride. And Jack is, as always, perfectly Jack.

Why You Should Read It: Lovely, beautifully drawn look at different aspects of the trio's characters, including one-off and supporting characters.

Summary: It's always best to check the local customs.
Why You Should Read It: I am always vastly entertained by "Jack almost gets married" stories, and mir does some lovely world-building in this that feels just like classic Who. Beautiful dynamic between the trio.

The Child That Time Made by calapine
Summary: The Doctor is gone and Rose is alone, left with a child she doesn’t want.
Why You Should Read It: Okay, it's baby!fic. But it's baby!fic from calapine, which somehow makes this hackney'd plot work for me. Also, it's very reminiscent of Susan in "Unearthly Child", in a way. It's also treacle-free, without any of the OTT purple-prose angst that is frequently mistaken for "deep" in fandom.

Why You Should Read It: Okay, there's a trend in post-regen fic to have Rose hang onto Nine's coat. It's a trend that bothers me, mainly cos it usually feels like the author hanging onto Nine and not giving Ten a fair shake, not to mention completely underestimating both Rose and the Doctor. However, in this story? It absolutely works for me, because I love her take on Ten & Rose, as a continuation-but-not-quite of Nine & Rose's comfortable and familair dynamic, but allowing for the inevitable subtle changes associated with regeneration. It's just a lovely look at what-might-be.

Why You Should Read It: Jack! Beautiful, stunning, spot-on Jack! It's really just a novelisation of that last scene in "The Doctor Dances" but it's got some beautiful Jack characterisation which I really enjoyed.

Why You Should Read It: Raven calls it fluff, but there's some lovely character stuff in this, executed with ehr usual light touch. It's lyrical without being sappy, and makes you smile without drowning you in sugar-y sweetness.

Summary: When Adam Mitchell was nineteen, he met a nice girl called Rose.
Why You Should Read It: Lovely short little glimpse into Adam's past, present, and future.

Women Wept (We Laughed There) by juleskicks
Summary: Sometimes she noticed the cold, yeah, and sometimes she didn't. Sometimes she was just too busy being amazed.
Why You Should Read It: Just a lovely look at the scene Rose explained to Mickey in "Boom Town" that is deeply rooted in who Rose is, and her and the Doctor's relationship. Gorgeous exploration of Rose's sense of wonder, peppered with lvoely little details that make the scene real for the readers.

Why You Should Read It: I'm really warming to Jack/Doctor, and this piece makes me actually believe it in a way a lot of the escapist fare (while enormously fun to read) doesn't.

Why You Should Read It: I like the way the Doctor & Rose's relationship works in this little snippet. It borrows a fair bit from "Father's Day" but feels like a solid continuation, emotionally. And it's always nice to see Rose as flawed, instead of with a shiny little halo.

Summary: Rose is getting her memory back in bits and pieces, and finally asks the Doctor about a worrying missing bit.
Why You Should Read It: While we've not really seen enough of Ten to know what might happen, I did like how this played out. It's sweet, without being overly cloying.

Why You Should Read It: Gorgeous exploration of the Doctor and Rose's relationship, extending the dancing metaphor without every beating it to death. Just graceful and lovely.

Why You Should Read It: Excellent insight into Jack, and just some wonderful dialogue (and flirting) between Jack and the Doctor.

Why You Should Read It: Possibly one of the hotetst stories I've seen, but it's got a kind of poetry to it that most of the smut in the fandom has been lacking which sets it apart. Lovely Rose-voice, and the bits of dialogue feel true.

Why You Should Read It:Let's face it: sex in fanfic (and romance novels) tends to be pure fantasy. Nobody ever gets hair in their mouths, or sore jaws, or complains about sleeping in the wet spot, or any of that stuff. But what I love about this kinky little PWP is the humour, the dialogue, and the little touches that made the sex even better for being real.

Why You Should Read It: Just a beautiful little moment, after the dual trauma that was "Dalek" and "Father's Day" as the Doctor and Rose each fall apart a little, and pick each other up from where they've fallen.

Why You Should Read It: First of all... yay the Zero room yay! (can you tell prior to Nine, Five was my fave?) Secondly, just a sweet little moment that says a lot about flying.

Why You Should Read It: This may be one of my all-time favourite Doctor/Rose stories, because it manages to balance the incredibly alienness of the Doctor with his vulnerabilities, and is erotic while still being grounded firmly 100% in the characters, and so bittersweet.

Summary: An echo of what should have been, but isn't.
Why You Should Read It: This is just gorgeous. I got completely swept up in the Doctor's emotions, and Rose's reactions and I love how grainne handled Rose finally hearing the name of the Doctor's planet.

Why You Should Read It: Oh em gee. Seriously. I love historical stories, and space stories, and this is both in spades, but the best part is how it sneaks in the gorgeous characterisation of the Doctor, and how he's been affected by the war.

Why You Should Read It: I'm always a bit wary now of "the Doctor and Rose share a bed" stories, but I love this one because it's subtle and shows a light touch.

Why You Should Read It: I love this story and want to have its babies. It manages to up the UST a touch from the canon level in a believable way, does relationship without treacle, has great pacing, and nails the Doctor and Rose's voices. Just great fun.

Intergalactic Playboy

Why You Should Read It: The later chapters feel a bit rushed, but there are just some gorgeous moments in this. And it's nice to see a first kiss that's not drowned in syrup, but feel organic and believable.
