you know, I just realised something about the BSG premiere.

It's very fanfic-y, the way EVERYONE got married. Not just shacked up, livin in sin. But legal and white picket fence-y MARRIED. Like, 13 year old girl hearts & flowers fanfic-y, in a way.

Kara and Anders. Lee and Dee. Cally and Tyrol. Helo and Caprica!Boomer. The only couples who didn't tie the knot during the 16 months between eps seem to be Roslinand Adama, and Baltar and Caprica!Six.

Yeah, see this was really, really, really creepy and fake for me. Because it stood out so hard, everytime someone said "thats why I married you". It was grating.

I kept thinking the same thing with the season finale, with everybody making babies...and then remembered there are less than fifty thousand people left.

Similarly, I was thinking the same thing through the season premiere...and then remembered that there are virtually no institutions left. Even the scraps of a government they were starting to build back up have gone to hell in Baltar's neurotic handbasket.

So, while I'm not thrilled that I have to think about it, once I have thought about it, it makes sound psychological sense. And I'm not sure I see any way around the having to think about it, because we're all living in a world where we would not expect some of these people to necessarily be doing that. But they're living in a world where it's the only attempt at stability available to them.

Except Baltar, who's still managing to cling to the delusion that his government even exists. Which means he doesn't have to take a step that he'd be the last person in the universe to take under normal circumstances. It'd actually be kind of interesting to see Six lobbying for it, but she actually has bigger things on her mind in a non-delusional manner.

ITA. Under the circumstances as set up in BSG, I'd think most people would feel an overwhelming urge to forge whatever emotional connections they could and to formalize those connections through the religion and rituals that symbolize the world they're attempting to recreate.

Whereas I would think that the gov would encourage everyone to have babies with multiple partners via contract marriages with an expiration date rather than just one, in order to widen the gene pool.

They'd only been on New Caprica for about a year when the Cylons found them so obstensibly, the group marriages/expansion of the gene pool wouldn't have been that feasible yet. ;)

Yeah, exactly. That would be a very interesting issue for them to confront down the line, but they wouldn't be at that point yet. Also, with a smaller gene pool, it's pretty important to know exactly who is related to whom, meaning that the push should be for serial monogamy.

And, for all we know, these are contract marriages.

I would think that there would have to be very detailed genetic/family records to keep the gene pool as diverse and healthy as possible if one was going to repopulate an entire species. So, yeah. But in the span of a year, you're talking about the first real wave of progeny and, obviously, as in the case of Duck & Mrs Duck, it just hadnt happened yet.

I suspect the couples we saw were love matches rather than contracted ones although it would make sense if there were both. I have my own questions about Lee/Dee but mainly because I just don't buy the ship. ;)

Hmm. That didn't really bother me. The society the characters come from is much more intensely religious then modern Western culture, I think. I gather casual sex isn't frowned upon nearly as much in Christianity, but on the other hand, family and fertility is an integral part of the religion. I gather that if you actually want to have kids and/or form a permanent family unit, the social expectation is still that you get married. That social expectation maybe even higher then it is our culture.

But, that's just my interpretation.

If you remember, Laura said in the abortion episode (title is escaping me right now) that the first mission for everyone was really to be fruitful and multiply in order to save the human race. So it makes sense that people would pair off and start makin' babies as soon as they presumed that they were in a safe place where they could raise children and settle.

Of course, in Gaius's case, he seems to have just found himself a couple of loose women and hasn't gotten around to the baby making part yet. ;)

I just was surprised to see the military types pairing off so quickly, while I can totally buy that for the civilians... Also, I really want to know how we got from Caprica!Boomer screaming she never wants to see Helo again, to being Mrs Karl Agathon... I hope that blank gets filled in soemday.

I think the military types are still religious for the most part so I'm guessing that they're taking it all to heart. We knew Galen was a bit warm fuzzy romantic anyway so he and Cally weren't really a surprise.

I'm hoping we get some flashbacks re: Helo. I know from things Jamie Bamber said at Shore Leave that we will find out how they got to certain points but not who or why (except in one specific case which I won't spoil you on).

I suppose one could argue that after the trama of the invasion/occupation, both civillians and military would be looking for any way to find some normalcy in their lives? And nothing would symbolize that like marriage. Although I really do hope they flash back to Dee/Lee, because that seems like the ultimate shotgun wedding to me.

Although nothing bugged me as much as that stupid fatsuit, and the 9lbs of extra makeup they put on Lee's face. Someone should have realized that he would have had to eat nothing but Burger King for 4 months straight and not move a muscle to gain that much weight in his face. Ugh.

We never actually saw a marriage, either. For all we know, it's as complex as going up to one of the Priests and asking for a marriage blessing, and then going back a year later when you want to split.

I was suprrised Lee and Dee got married, and Kara. I wasn't surprised at all by Cally & Tyrol or Helo and Boomer.

I thought it fit well with her path of loyalties and determination. She's really put it out there-- not only been sworn in anew as an officer, but she's MARRIED into that world now. I was a little surprised she got over the loss of her child and blaming them for it (gods help what she'll think of Adama when she finds out her daughter lived), but she did seem to be more emotionally grounded overall than Galactica!Sharon.

While the psychological warfare is moving her in that direction, I wouldn't exactly call Kara married in any but the most negative "you are my property" sense.

Oops. Anders is one of those names that never stuck with me. Besides, they got married during the season finale, not between seasons like all your other examples. :)

I refer to this phenomenon as "Something in the Hogwarts Drinking Water," inspired by the countless fics that have the characters maintaining the pairings that cropped up at age 14 and all ending up married. It's annoying as heck.

Yes, the everybody-got-married thing was amusing, but I don't suppose that anything will be less interesting because of it. It allows a bunch of characters to wander around saying things like "my wife!" and "my husband!" and yearning to be reunited, producing babies together, etc. But if things stabilize again, I'm sure we'll be right back to the partner-swapping days of yore.

I somehow didn't catch the part where Caprica!Boomer and Helo got married.

I can't ever see Baltar and Caprica!Six getting married. It's not her style and he'd be too twitchy and greasy-haired to make it through vows without slipping off the dais.

And Rosalin / Adama are still my OTP. :)
