I finally gots "Fires of Pompeii" and oh oh oh that was PROPER OLD SKOOL WHO. What with the companion getting dressed up in costume (which we have not seen in NuWho since "Unquiet Dead" y/n? ETA: DUH. "Human Nature" I am SO LAME.) and silly jokes and angst and lots and lots of wigs and I AM WELL PLEASED. Also, I maybe cried a bit. I really am liking how Donna is just putting her foot down and fighting him when she thinks he's wrong. That was what I loved about the Ninth Doctor and Rose, and so I'm digging it with the Tenth and Donna. Also, yes the Spartacus joke was lame, but I laughed liek whoa. Also I think James Moran kept the Rule of Three with the Celtic joke too. Hurrah. And oh oh oh "I had nothing to do with that fire" LIAR. Also, WHAT ABOUT LONDON THAT ONE TIME, EH?
I actually love that almost immediately after getting a new companion, the Doctor takes her to either her planet's past or future to impress her. It's actually a comforting pattern, because we know after those first few eps (modern London, past, future, another Earth-based story) when the viewer is all comfy, that's when things get shaken up and things change. Maybe it's only "Dalek" from series one that started it in my head, but I think that it helps us get to know the companion, and then once we really know her and her dynamic with the Doctor, then we get to see what happens when you start to fuck with that dynamic big time.
Maybe that's what made series two feel so off? *ponders* Cos we already knew Rose, and so it was the Tenth Doctor we were suppsoed to be learning the ways of instead...
Right. Brain is clearly overtaxed, and I am rambling nonsense talk. Bed now.
