OMG SO AWESOME. This article is like ESPIONAGE GEEK PORN. I'm serious. Cracking the Enigma cipher during WWII? SEXY. I'm only up through the Brits capturing the Enigma codebooks from the U-110 and fooling the Germans using deception techniques (like flying recon over areas they already knew from the broken codes were important, just so the Germans would believe it was the planes what spotted it, and that the Enigma codes were still safe and keep using themn. GENIUS). But I am seriously seriously loving this.

Also, whoever at the NSA who wrote it actually makes me understand how the damned things worked, which is more than I can say for everything I've read thus far on the Enigma machines.

I remember reading Cryptonomicon - one part was laughing, another part was saying WTF and the other part...the part with code breaking and Enigma and all the machinations they went through in order to convince the Germans they didn't know what they really did know, was filled with SQUEE. It's delicious stuff.

Have you ever read Secret Soldiers? It's a KICKASS book about the deception units in WWII in the UK and US. So so so awesome.

I have been meaning for, like, the past two decades, to go to the National Cryptological Museum at NSA. Moreso since I heard they updated the exhibit a while ago.

Sadly, I'll probably end up at the International Spy Museum first.

The Smithsonian used to have some of the WWII era stuff on display at the American History museum, but it's closed for another six months at least and nobody knows which of the permanent exhbitions they're keeping. :(

Tara m'dear, I'm conveniently located between a train station, an airport, and the Fort. And I've got a sleeper sofa always ready.

Oh god, you're making me all nostalgic for the espionage LARPs I used to write and play in as an undergrad. Geeks totally won WWII and the Cold War. So hot.

Thanks for the link. I've passed this on to my boss (Bruce Schneier), so it might show up on his blog.

He had nothing to do with that page, but was definitely amused by some of them.
