Today I have decided to concentrate my glee on Sarah Jane Adventures. And I invite everyone on my flist to tell me three things they love about it, what makes them happy. I shall start.

  1. Sarah Jane is amazingly uncomfortable with motherhood, but is gamely trying her best, and her obvious crapness at it is actually very endearing.

  2. Alan Jackson is MADE OF WIN.

  3. OMG THE BLACK GUARDIAN SANS STUPID BIRD ON HIS HEAD! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

Now it's your turn. What makes you glee?

1. Because it's more old school than Torchwood and Doctor Who put together and REFERENCES THE BRIG!! *dances*

2. Because there is an actual product in our local Ann Summers called 'Sonic Vibration Lipstick' and therefore it never gets funny saying 'Sonic Lipstick: every time she uses it, she thinks of the Doctor.' Okay, I am childish.

3. Because the cast, most unusually for child actors, can actually act convincingly.

I love it so.

Brilliant.

Ah, I think any smart woman has to giggle at the reference. I have! Then again, I'm the person who postulated Torchwood Signature Sex Toys last year so.... ;)

1. Sarah Jane's wardrobe: because she proves 60 yr old women can rock short skirts, boots and purple velvet coats!

2. Chrissie Jackson: because she's a great comic foil and rival who, we find out, isn't 100% bad or evil. Just self-centered and misguided.

3. Maria Jackson (and Luke and Clyde): great kids who aren't cloying, annoying or sickly sweet. And Maria is a great Girl Power icon (along with Sarah Jane herself) without being preachy or obnoxious.

3. Sarah Jane.

(What? No amount of love is too much love for Sarah Jane.)

1. Boots. SJ can rock the boots.

2. Mr. Smith's theme music. His pomposity is made of LOL.

3. The fact she is competence with heart. A strong woman who doesn't dismiss her emotions. In fact, they make her stronger.

1. The risks and the solutions to the problems are in keeping with the abilities of the characters involved. Nobody turns into Jeebus or Tinkerbell to fix things. They have to think their way out.

2. Alan is H-O-T HAWT. And yet not a jerk. And still a competent, loving parent. A VERY rare combination.

3. Elizabeth Sladen has aged (more or less) naturally (or she has the best.surgeon.ever.). And that's totally okay. Nobody expects her to look or act 25. And she is still VERY attractive. Try doing THAT on US telly.

1-3: Because they got rid of the annoying female friend after the pilot.

Seriously, it's that great a change.

1. Sarah Jane. Of course.

2. The way the first season just fit together so perfectly. Yay, continuity!

3. Clyde/Luke. In a PG sort of way, obviously.

1. Sarah Jane is the world's greatest role model for growing up and growing older on her own terms, because I only buy the "she was always there waiting for the Doctor to come back" as her being wistful rather than accurate.

2. All three young actors can act rings around the teens I've seen written elsewhere, omg.

3. Kelsey. I understand I am the only person who thinks this in the world, but I loved her character in the pilot because they got "slightly vapid, slightly horny, insecure, hopeful, not precociously smart or snarky teenaged girl" exactly right and I have never seen that anywhere else in fiction. I may not have liked those girls when I was a teenager, especially when they were mean, but I appreciate the honesty of the portrayal.

1. The part where Luke almost got named after the Brig or Harry. That was such an awesome shout-out.

2) The Clyde-Luke Double Act. Yeah, I ship it, but I love their friendship too.

3) Sarah training Maria up to be JUST LIKE HER.

1. I ditto on the awkward-with-motherhood thing. Actually, Sarah Jane in general... I'm really enjoying watching an middle-aged/older female in a lead - Just for it's own sake.

2. I've been watching so much British PR0N, erm... Adult TV that I find myself really enjoying something clean and wholesome and generally aimed at an innocent crowd for a change - I think they're doing a really good job of making it a kid's show. It's feeling relatively fangirl-free so far - Which is a new state of being for me and surprisingly enjoyable. (However, I do not appreciate being turned into my Grandmother - God help me, I'll be voting republican before you know it.)

3. Um... I'm only half way through first season, so I haven't seen everything - I'm not coming up with a strong three yet. I suppose right now, #3 could be how colorful it is - I respond to color and shiny things and I really like how colorful (literally) the set direction has been.

Oh, MAN.

1. Sarah Jane (and her car and her lipstick and her hot leather jacket).
2. Elisabeth Sladen's ability to be a hotass action heroine at age 60.
3. Everything else. Except maybe Maria's mom.

Seriously, of the three Who-verse shows out currently there, I may very well like this one best.

1. Sarah Jane got a SON! I was watching 'Hand of Fear' last night, and i got all teary thinking about Sarah telling the Doctor in 'School Reunion' that it's too late for her to have children or grandchildren, and then i got all teary again thinking that she got Luke

2. Luke and Clyde are hilarious,. Luke with his overanalyzation of everything, trying to piece together the puzzles of human interaction. He is the geek in all of us, but so good natured about it! And Clyde is SUCH the cool kid, but he's got a good heart and good instincts, he's not a jerk, they're a great comedy duo.

3. Sarah Jane! She's not young anymore, but she's NOT pining and she's NOT going to waste, she's having a good life, and she's being strong, and learning to love again, after having her heart broken by the Doctor. *sniff* Sorry, gotta go, tearing up again. She's my favorite companion ever.

1. Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane, which is one of my favourite stories in the DW universe, and which made me bawl. And leading on from that -

1a. Maria, who's just so earnest and clever and brave - in that story especially - and why wasn't she on TV when I was 10, dammit.

2. Clyde, because I adore him, and his interaction with Luke.

3. Sarah herself, because she battles evil nuns and MOTORCYCLE NINJAS.

1. Sarah's prickliness! Everyone knows it for what it is, and just deals with it rather than having a ton of drama over it. It adds lovely texture to the character, as well as all the interactions. I love it. I think it'll be toned down in the coming season, but I hope she never loses it.

2. Cliffhangers reminiscent of Old Who. In fact, SJA in general is more old school Who than either of the other two current shows. Huge plus in my book.

3. Boots. OMG the boots!

Everything about the show is made of win, IMO.

1. Maria has all the good sides of being a sidekick while still being a main character and rocking it hardcore.

2. Team Sarah Jane would kick the collective asses of team Torchwood and team Doctor. (Of course, putting team Torchwood with team Doctor brings team Doctor down, so it's a bit unfair, but still.)

3. Clyde and Luke are adorable together and there's futureslash even, so all is good.

And the stuff you mentioned. And a lot more. Do I really have to limit myself to three things?

1. Far and away, the best handling of divorce re: children I've ever seen on TV. It's a part of the characters' lives without being After School Special about it.

2. Luke, and all his adorable awkwardness. Totally brings home the whole "life on Earth can be an adventure too" thing in the simplest of situations.

3. Alan, in all his clueless infinite hotness. :-)

1. Maria Jackson, apprenticed to Sarah Jane Smith. If she's not a companion on the mothership in a few years, I may have to cry.

2. "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane" -- I actually wish this had been the finale, because "The Lost Boy" was a letdown, comparatively -- I actually had to stop and watch the scene where Maria meets the young Sarah and Andrea again, because I wriggled and squeaked all the way through.

3. Clyde/Maria/Luke. Hush, not now! They're the new Ron/Harry/Hermione, and I really wish/hope the kids will turn up in a HP movie, just for the brainspasms it'll give me.

3. The way they sprinkle little continuity references in to gladden fanboy hears everywhere.

1. Sarah Jane! YES! An older woman can still save the world and have an excellent wardrobe at the same time.

2. The Sarah Jane/Luke relationship: 'cause she's mostly clueless re motherhood and he's mostly clueless re teenagehood

3. The whole Jackson family-- Maria the mini-Sarah, Alan the hunk with a heart, and Chrissie who means well but is basically an average (self-centered) person

1. SJA doesn't mind putting the kids in real danger, and lets them solve their way out sometimes too. Doesn't talk down to the viewers too much either. Unlike stupid US children's shows :(

2. Clyde is so Teenage Mickey, but without the Rose hangup. He's brilliant! :)

3. Alan Jackson is awesome.

1. Our hero has cool gadgets, thinks fast, has awesome sidekicks -- and is a fifty-something woman!
2. Mothers that love their children yet aren't always great at the parenting thing.
3. Charismatic kids! I love Clyde, Maria, and Luke.

Only three? I could go on for a while.

1. Clyde and Luke, filling in for each other's limitations and just generally being sweet together.
2. Alan Jackson, the "ignorant adult" who's concerned, a good parent, and never tipped over into being an outright idiot.
3. Sarah Jane. Being pushy and nosy and outrunning a motorcycle.

1) A woman over 60 is the sexy, smart, action heroine, not home dispensing wisdom and cookies.

2) Luke and Clyde are the best team ever!

3) It's gone back to the roots of Who: using science to solve gothic mysteries, with a little snark and a lot of characterization, and a general distaste for violence.

Bonus 4: Sarah's attic! It's full of all sorts of squeeful shout-outs and mementos!

1. Sarah-Jane (& Liz Sladen). Perhaps (after Ian and Barbara) the most down-to-earth Companion; who has survived being Recalled to Action twice; who has coped with K-9 longer than any of the Doctors ever did; who wasn't young when she first met the Doctor, but managed not to be old now; and who manages to relate, sensibly, to the children she's suddenly thrust into coping with,

2. The use of brain-power rather than gadgets to solve things. You can just see S-J relaxing with the older versions of Nancy Drew or Velma Dinckley (now *there's* a cross-over !!) and it being an intellectual conversation.

3. The Sonic Lipstick -- not least that way it *doesn't* solve some problems. And S-J's obviously practiced with it a lot: she doesn't just use it one Way: she adapts its functions to make the most of them.
